The world is becoming more violent, and in new ways. We struggle to find appropriate responses to violent extremism, networked criminality and other new sources of conflict. The limits of military intervention have become increasingly obvious. Private diplomacy, sponsored by NGOs like Humanitarian Dialogue, is one of the few tools for the management of armed conflict to attract growing support. But what can it deliver?
