Conflict is central to politics. Therefore, violent conflict is commonplace. Yet the shape, content, and outcome of violent conflict have varied considerably over time. Part of this variation is due to the evolution of military technology. Two other factors have had considerable impact as well: the structure of the international system and the dynamics of global ideologies. Through the specific lens of warfare, this lecture reviews the evolution and transformation of mass political violence over the past two centuries with an emphasis on civil wars.
