Each year, hundreds of thousands of scientists around the globe attempt to discover new medicines to treat every imaginable human disease. This research is extremely challenging and slow, and most research projects fail. There are two fundamental problems. First, we lack basic understanding of how the body works, of what causes disease, and how to design the new drugs. Second, it is critical to build and maintain a culture and infrastructure that encourages long-term thinking and scientific risk-taking. This lecture describes ways to address these challenges to accelerate the creation of important new medicines in the future.
