The tribal confederation of the Kitans defeated the ruling Chinese dynasty, controlled Beijing, had diplomatic ties with multiple Asian powers, and imported goods from even farther away, but most people who have heard of the Song dynasty do not know who the Kitans were. This lecture explores how much the different peoples of the globe knew about each other in the year 1000.
