The port of Surat emerged into prominence in the 1540s, three decades before it was conquered by the Mughal dynasty. For the next two centuries, it remained one of the most important commercial centers in the Indian Ocean, and arguably one of the greatest ports in the world. This lecture looks at Surat as a place where traders, intellectuals, Sufi masters, pirates, and warlords all had their part to play.
