When God created the world, the saying went, He placed nine-tenths of its wonders in the East. Looking at the ninth-to-tenth-century Akhbar al-sin wa 'l-hind compiled by Abu Zayd al-Sirafi and others, and the 14th-century Rihlah of Ibn Battutah, Tim Mackintosh-Smith compares ways in which travelers from the Islamic world reacted to the wonders of India and China, how they tried to make sense of the incomprehensible–and why. He also examines the blurring of cultural borders over the centuries that separate the two accounts.
