Many modern myths swirl around this volatile issue. Is contemporary Muslim antisemitism something new, incited by Zionism and more recently by the policies and actions of Israel in the Middle East, particularly as applied to the Palestinians? Or, is it in part an age-old Jew-hatred ingrained in the religion of Islam and traceable to the Qur’an itself? The short answer is that it is not rooted in the Islamic religion. It was imported from Europe during the age of colonialism. For centuries Jews lived more securely in the Muslim world than in Europe, without the irrational hatred wrought by western Jew-hatred. These and other questions are addressed in this lecture.
