Anonymous donors poured record amounts of money into the last US presidential election. Most believe that “dark money” was the story of 2012, but this trend is merely a symptom of a deeper shift, one that could reshape American politics. We should worry less about dark money and more about the emergence of “shadow” political parties, which threaten to upset the balance of power between the American electorate and political elites.
