Christo and Jeanne-Claude's large-scale works of art require extremely precise planning and elaborate engineering to succeed. Involving the very best professional engineers is essential. For the sculpture "The Mastaba, Project for the United Arab Emirates," Christo has chosen the German structural engineering company Schlaich, Bergemann and Partners to field the team striving for the answers to the many technical challenges posed by the construction of this massive work of art, a permanent structure of 410,000 barrels.
This conversation between Christo and the leader of that team illustrates and examines the close collaboration between artist and engineer.
