Shari'a: 1400 Years of Islamic Law

Talk

6-7:30 PM EST WHERE 19 Washington Square North Part of "The New Middle East" WHO NYU Abu Dhabi Institute in New York Open to the Public

Drawing on his recently published book Heaven on Earth: A Journey Through Shari’a Law From the Deserts of Ancient Arabia to the Streets of the Modern Muslim World, Sadakat Kadri will discuss his long, historical view of Islamic law. He argues Shari’a was not static but has been continually reevaluated and reinterpreted, and those modifications need to be considered in an historical context to be best understood. What remains unanswered, however, is who has the right to interpret, reinterpret, and enforce Shari’a.
