In 2010 Abu Dhabi launched the creation of an impartial and independent breaking news channel for the Arab world across multiple platforms, as a joint venture with the UK-based Sky television service. With that mandate comes numerous challenges, such as how the channel will distinguish itself from competitors al-Arabiya, al-Jazeera and Alarab; its ability to deliver non-partisan, critical news coverage; and how social media might be leveraged to further the channel’s ambitions.
