Most urban residents in sub-Saharan Africa do not have access to proper sanitation.  More importantly, conditions across the continent have not improved over the past twenty years despite significant increases in income.  As a result, urban sanitation in Africa is the worst performing component of the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals (MDG).  Robert Buckley will discuss why this result has occurred and consider the African experience within both historical and spatial contexts.
