Although instances of inter-communal violence are easily recognized, they are generally channeled through legal and criminal justice systems disproportionately controlled by dominant social groups. As a result, a substantial portion of the criminal justice system’s output can be seen as a form of intergroup violence designed to maintain the structural integrity of group-based social hierarchy.
