One of France’s most controversial filmmakers for his involvement with Continental Films during the German occupation of France, Henri-Georges Clouzot became an international celebrity, even before his better-known Les Diaboliques (1955), with the release of Wages of Fear. The French-Italian co-production stars Yves Montand as a working-class European man who embarks upon a dangerous journey for money, transporting highly combustible nitroglycerine across the rugged, tropical terrains of an imagined Latin American country for a foreign-controlled oil company.
