Seeking to go beyond the city as spectacle, this talk examines notions of informality as they pertain to the use of public spaces in Dubai, and introduces ongoing research that aims to map the city’s informal areas of encounter and uncover its hidden sites. Professor Elsheshtawy presents a detailed case study on Hor Al Anz, one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Dubai, contextualized within the city's urban development and planning practices.
