Marking the centennial of the birth of Naguib Mahfouz, the great Arab novelist of the 20th century, we celebrate by screening a selection of films based on his work. Our second film in this series, Midaq Alley, is a spirited adaptation of his novel by the same name portraying the hardships of life in the impoverished back alleys of Old Cairo during the 1940s. Published in 1947, Midaq Alley was cited as one of Mahfouz's signal achievements when awarded the Nobel Prize in 1988. Feature Film (1963). Director: Hassan al-Imam. Time: 105 minutes
