Inaugurating public discussion of the Library of Arabic Literature, a project funded by the NYUAD Institute to translate the works of classical Arabic into English, this lecture will: assess the significance of Muhammad ibn Idris al-Shafi`i's Risala; and address some of the challenges of a contemporary translation into English in light of the work's cardinal importance as a founding text of Islamic law.
