• Who can apply to the Laidlaw Scholars Program?

  The program is open to first- and second-year NYU Abu Dhabi students who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership potential, and a commitment to creating positive social impact.

• What is the duration of the program?

  The Laidlaw Scholars Program spans eighteen monthsand includes leadership development, a faculty-mentored research project, and a six-week Leadership in Action experience.

• What is the time commitment?

  Scholars participate in leadership workshops and cohort activities throughout the academic year, complete a research project during the first summer, and undertake a Leadership in Action experience during the second summer.

• What is Leadership in Action (LIA)?

  Leadership in Action (LIA) is a six-week immersive experience that enables scholars to apply their leadership skills by working with communities, NGOs, social enterprises, or other organizations addressing real-world challenges.

• Where can I complete my Leadership in Action project?

  Scholars may participate in a Central LIA Project with one of Laidlaw's global partner organizations or propose an Independent LIA project, subject to program approval.

• Will I receive funding?

  Yes. The program provides funding to support both the Research and Leadership in Action components. 

• Can I choose my own research topic?

  Yes. Scholars work closely with a faculty mentor to develop a research project that aligns with their academic interests and the program's objectives.

• Can I complete my Leadership in Action project in the UAE?

  Depending on the nature of the project and program requirements, scholars may be able to undertake Leadership in Action locally or internationally. All projects must meet the program's learning objectives and receive prior approval.

• How are scholars selected?

  Applications are reviewed holistically, considering academic achievement, leadership potential, curiosity, commitment to service, and the ability to contribute positively to the Laidlaw community. Shortlisted applicants may be invited to interview.

• How do I apply?

  Applications are submitted through the NYU Abu Dhabi Laidlaw Scholars Program application portal and reviewed by faculty and staff.
