De/Colonial Botany

Conference

WHEN November 12, 2024
9:30 AM - 6:30 PM WHERE 19 Washington Square North WHO NYU Abu Dhabi Institute in New York By Invitation Interested scholars please contact nyuad.institute.ny@nyu.edu

Can we reimagine the relationships among nature, history, and nation-building through the lens of a decolonial botany? How could unmaking the plant taxonomy refigure ongoing discussions on more-than-human representation and multi-species sovereignty? What parallels can we draw between plant migration and counter-institutional practices? This interdisciplinary symposium explores the complex and dynamic forces of ecology, art, architecture, and museology through botany’s colonial legacies. Topics include nineteenth-century botanical displays, and current debates on plant mobility, governance, agency, repair, and indigeneity, as well as the living archive.
