Colorism 2.0: Insights from Psychology, Economics, and the Media

Hosted at NYU Abu Dhabi on April 17-18, 2025, this global conference on colorism aims to convene prominent scholars, practitioners, and thought leaders to explore the far-reaching implications of skin color and its intersections with structural and systemic discrimination. Building upon the success of our inaugural 2023 symposium, this year’s focus will delve deeper into human psychology, economics, and the media's role in perpetuating or challenging colorism. Additionally, the symposium will highlight cross-cultural perspectives from Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

  • Building on the momentum of the 2023 symposium, Colorism 2.0: Insights from Psychology, Economics, and the Media brings together distinguished scholars from across the world to guide specialized discourse about colorism.

Often conflated or overlooked with the study of racism, today’s digital landscape is changing the discussion around the topic of colorism. In conjunction with the transformation of the media landscape, there has been an increase in research in the past two decades that addresses how hierarchies of skin-color manifest not only across but also within racial and ethnic groups.

Over the two days, participants will intersect over multi-disciplinary frameworks for the study of colorism. Scholars and discussion themes cross human psychology, economics, and the media's role in perpetuating or challenging colorism. Additionally, the symposium will highlight regional dynamics, including a focus on “Colorism in the Gulf,” and will provide broader cross-cultural perspectives from Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

The symposium will feature panels, workshops, and keynote presentations from distinguished scholars and practitioners. The symposium will offer networking opportunities to build bridges across academic and professional communities. Collaborations with partner organizations such as C-BID, the NYU Global Network, Georgetown University Qatar, and Adler University will enhance the depth and reach of this event.

Colorism Across Global Lines 2.0: Insights from Psychology, Economics and the Media offers a platform for intellectual and practical engagement, fostering innovative approaches to dismantling colorism globally. By hosting this event in the United Arab Emirates, a leading example of multiculturalism, we aim to amplify diverse voices and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

Being part of a global network and a pioneer in developing a truly global model of higher education, NYU Abu Dhabi has a duty to address and respond in powerful and interdisciplinary ways to universal shared challenges. This conference allowed for an intellectual forum for discourse about the issue of colorism and its varied manifestations in communities globally and regionally. Often researched in cultural pockets, this platform will allow for analysis and understanding of colorism through a cross-regional and cultural lens.
