Maurice Pomerantz

Senior Director of the NYUAD Institute in Abu Dhabi

Maurice Pomerantz is Senior Director of the NYUAD Institute in Abu Dhabi, and Associate Professor of Literature and Arab Crossroads Studies. Pomerantz is an expert in the field of pre-modern Arabic literature. He completed his PhD in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago in 2010, having joined the faculty of NYU in 2008. Pomerantz has published four books related to many aspects of the history of Arabic literary expression and courtly culture, Licit Magic: The Life and Letters of al-Ṣāḥib b. ‘Abbād(d. 385/995) Brill: Leiden, 2017, In the Presence of Power: Court and Performance in the Pre-Modern Middle East (New York: New York University Press, 2018),The Heritage of Arabo-Islamic Learning (Brill:Leiden, 2016 ), and The Maqāmāt of Badīʿ al-Zamān al-Hamadhānī: Authorship, Texts, and Contexts(Wiesbaden: Reichert Verlag, 2022) which was co-authored with Dr Bilal Orfali. Since 2014, Pomerantz has been an editor of The Library of Arabic Literature, a series of facing-page translations of major works of Arabic literature published by New York University Press.
