Learn about Soft Chaos, a guided improvisation contemporary dance movement practice inspired by chakra cleansing.
It begins with a warm up and body scan in an upwards path of liberation. We layer momentum with interruptions that redirect our body in space. We then travel downwards through the path of manifestation. Taking control of our decision making, agency, and the curating of our bodies in space and in relation to others. The path of manifestation provides an opportunity to affect change and consciously inhabit the body. Participants will be encouraged to challenge their lengths of physical form, technique, stamina, and presence. You decide your limitations. We conclude the class with phrase work/choreography to unite our centered focus.
Biography
Amara Barner
Amara Barner is a multidisciplinary artist from the USA, who currently resides in Montreal,Quebec. As a teenager she traveled across the USA as an assistant to Emma Portner, as well as the choreographers of The Pulse OnTour, and Intrigue Dance Convention. During this time,Amara was granted opportunities to perform and teach at workshops in Australia, Mexico,England, and Italy. After moving to New York City at 15, Amara trained and worked commercially, including dancing backup for Sia on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon. At 18 years old, Barner became the youngest dancer ever hired for the Montreal company, RUBBERBAND. She toured internationally with the company from 2016-2021. Amara has since gone on to perform the works of artists such as Anne Plamondon, Dana Gingras/Animals ofDistinction, and Elon Höglund/Tentacle Tribe. She has danced in music videos such as LaForce’s All That I Am, Aisha Bahdru’s Lazy River, Dominique Fils-Aimé’s Mind at Ease, and Make Believe by Sicksense. Barner has also adjudicated at dance competitions such asNEOVATE and Hit The Floor. In 2023, Amara was hired as a choreographer/movement direction lead for the clothing company, GARAGE, for their ELEVÉE campaign. Amara was featured in Dance Magazine’s July 2020 issue as an artist “On The Rise“.Amara’s self-driven creative work combines fiber set designs and installations with dance performance.
