Poetry Based Performance Workshop with Farah Chamma

During this workshop with Farah Chamma, participants will explore the methods used to activate different genres of poetry in a variety of mediums. Amiri Baraka performed Somebody Blew Up America with sounds of an owl exploding. Hugo Ball performed Karawane with no words at all. Participants will have insight of different examples in Arabic and English, navigating with bursts of text readings, exercises and discussions.

Farah Chamma

A Palestinian poet and performer, Farah is known for her spoken-word performances, in which she combines orality, acting, and live music. She serves as a nominator/curator for this year’s edition of Hekayah | The Story, for which she’s been a performer on multiple previous editions.

She’s performed in many different events and festivals around the world including: Palestine en Campagne (France), Wilde Möhre (Germany), Bradford Literature Festival (UK), Karama Film Festival (Jordan), Pèlerinage en Décalage (France), Faladura Festival (Portugal), and many more. She’s been the subject of a short film called Unspoken produced by Image Nation Abu Dhabi and directed by Lebanese filmmaker Samia Badih.

She currently lives and works in the United Arab Emirates, where she is also the curator of creative writing and performance arts programs at the House of Wisdom in Sharjah.

Besides her native Arabic, she also writes and performs in English and French. She holds a master’s degree in Performance and Culture from Goldsmiths, University of London and a BA in Philosophy and Sociology from the Sorbonne in Paris.
