Join Boom.Diwan for an in-depth demonstration and conversation about the rhythms of Khaleeji seafaring music.

The workshop will be led by ethnomusicologist Ghazi Al-Mulaifi, along with Boom.Diwan, a collaborative jazz ensemble that is inspired by Kuwaiti seafaring music. Participants will have the opportunity to learn percussive techniques, and explore and perform the important sounds of the sea.

This workshop is presented in collaboration with al Mawrid’s inaugural Haraka Experimental Lab Sharbaka Exhibition.

Biography

Ghazi Al-Mulaifi

Ghazi Faisal Al-Mulaifi, PhD is an applied-ethnomusicologist who received his PhD in ethnomusicology from New York University in 2016. In addition to working as an assistant professor of music, Al-Mulaifi is also a Venice Biennale artist, composer, Khaleeji-jazz musician, and ensemble leader.

His research interests include Kuwaiti seafaring music, the music of the Indian Ocean civilizations trade routes and global jazz. His current musical efforts include performing with his ensemble Boom.Diwan where he and traditional Kuwaiti seafaring musicians merge Kuwaiti bahri (sea) rhythms with global jazz traditions for the purpose of creating a new Khaleeji music and engaging in a global musical dialog.
