Fire this Time - Music and the Baldwin Protocol

Poet and musician Lynne Procope launches a new series in partnership with National Sawdust that explores the intellectual and artistic legacy of James Baldwin.

Join The National Sawdust (USA) for a conversation series which engages musicians, critics, stick fighters, DJs, academics, curators, poets, and music lovers at the lay lines of organizing, activism, and the legacy of perhaps the most influential writer of the last century, James Baldwin.

In this series, they explore Baldwin’s influence and his continued impact through the lens of the work, experiments, collaborations, and the vital futures imagined by guests, the people bearing his flame on all fronts. Writer, curator, and long-time NS/VIA collaborator, Lynne Procope, will spirit guide this unique journey.

Conceived for social media as a virtual salon of sorts, it will bring together Lynne’s community for free-form sessions engaging with justice, freedom, joy, and heritage; sharing recipes for drinks and dishes from their respective traditions.

Here are some questions the series will tackle. How have they survived the pandemic and uprisings of 2020? How has it impacted their practice of art and living? What frame of mind do they find themselves in at the moment? Top five teachers of their lives? Relationship to Baldwin and his writings or debates or ideas or life story? What music are they currently excited by? Their relationship to social justice or whatever else they want to talk about regarding the music?
