Vox Motus adapts Caroline Brothers’ 2012 novel Hinterland in a magical experience that combines unsettling themes with spellbinding images.

Two young orphaned Afghan brothers embark on a desperate odyssey to freedom and safety. With their small inheritance stitched into their clothes, they set off on an epic journey across Europe, in a heart-wrenching road story of terror, hope, and survival.

Flight brings you up close and intimate to this heartbreaking story in a unique, deeply individual experience. Seated in your own personal booth, you will watch the action unfold on images and models slowly moving in front of you, with speech and music conveyed through your own individual headphones.

Flight was initially commissioned by the Edinburgh International Festival in 2017 and presented in association with the Beacon Arts Centre. The production has just completed a critically acclaimed run at the McKittrick Hotel in New York.

Biographies

Vox Motus is a theater of storytelling visuals, transformational design, magic, comedy, music, physical performance, puppetry, multimedia and most importantly thrills.

They are drawn to stories that explore extremes of behavior and taboos in the contemporary world: often unbelievable true tales that delve into the bizarre, glorious, exhilarating, and macabre. The stories they tell offer audiences opportunities to engage in live experiences that may in small (or large) ways enhance or challenge your understanding of the world.

Vox Motus is a sociable creature and for each project collaboration with other artists – composers, designers, illustrative artists, choreographers, digital editors – is at the heart of our work.

Candice Edmunds is co-Artistic Director of award-winning theatre company Vox Motus, as well as a director and dramaturg in theater and dance.

For Vox Motus Candice has co created and directed Dragon, The Infamous Brothers Davenport, The Not-So-Fatal Death of Grandpa Fredo, Bright Black, Slick, How to Steal a Diamond and Interference.

Other credits include: Carmen (Oper Wuppertal); Dance of Death (Candice Edmunds in association with the Citizens’ Theatre); Whiteout, The River and A Conversation with Carmel (Barrowland Ballet); Without A Hitch (Room 2 Manoeuvre); Thoughts Spoken Aloud From Above (National Theatre Scotland/A Play, A Pie and A Pint).

Jamie Harrison is co-artistic director of Vox Motus for which he has co-created, co-directed, and designed all of the company’s work.

In addition to Vox Motus’ creations Jamie has worked on numerous other theater productions in various roles including director, designer, illusion designer and puppet designer. In 2016 he created the magic and illusion for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (Sonia Friedman Productions) at the Palace Theatre, London. Jamie also designed the puppets and illusions for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory the New Musical (Warner Brothers/Neal Street Productions) at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, London, and recently developed the illusion design for the National Theatre production of Pinocchio (National Theatre/Disney Theatrical Productions)
Jamie trained at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (2002).
