A thrilling multimedia collaboration by three pioneers who emerged out of one of the most vibrant and prolific periods in New York’s art world.
“You watch the dancers’ subtle changes in accent amid unflagging speed, how they stream across the stage with a thrilling constancy…and you think, yes, this is the essence of dance” – The Washington Post
A seminal collaboration emerging out of one of the most vibrant and prolific periods in New York’s art world, DANCE is a signature work by one of the pillars of the Judson Dance Theater collective, Lucinda Childs. Recipient of the NEA/NEFA American Masterpiece Award, the 1979 classic was remounted by the Richard B. Fisher Center at Bard College with a complete restoration of Sol LeWitt’s work on film, which comprises the work’s decor and with which the dancers seamlessly interact. DANCE tours with a company of eleven dancers under Childs’ direction.

“If good design equals the sum of its parts, it’s no question that 30 years later “Dance” endures.” – The New York Times
Lucinda Childs Dance Company made their UAE debut in 2017 to help mark the opening of The Louvre Abu Dhabi.
The reconstruction of DANCE was commissioned by the Richard B. Fisher Center for the
Performing Arts at Bard College, with additional support from The Yard, a colony for performing artists on Martha’s Vineyard.

Dance Workshop with Lucinda Childs Dance Company
Join members of the Lucinda Childs Dance Company to learn passages from Dance. This two-hour session includes a ballet barre warm up before moving to the stage to review and practice phrases of the geometrically complex floor combinations that distinguished Childs’ work of the 1970s. The patterns of the dancers are highlighted by subtle variations in the phrasing of each movement’s sequence. The choreography is entirely abstract and closely follows the musical score written by Philip Glass specifically for Dance.
