Pianist/composer Nik Bärtsch leads his acoustic quartet MOBILE in a 27-hour “Ritual Groove Music” performance installation, organically weaving textures from jazz, funk, new music, and minimalism with ritual and sacred music. This site-specific, multi-venue, non-stop multi-media performance will feature a series of formal concerts and extended musical bridges throughout the night and day, with a visual installation designed by Daniel Eaton.

The audience is invited to join the intense core performance in the Black Box, to relax and dream in the ambient majlis in the foyer, or to visit the companion Project Space exhibition to learn more about the history and context of Nik Bärtsch’s MOBILE’s Rituals. The acoustic, visual, and social resonance reverberates around the main performance in the Black Box to create a vibrating community connection to open The Arts Center’s season.

This site-specific, multi-venue, non-stop 27 hour, multi-media performance will feature a series of Main Ceremony ‘concert moments’ at approximately 8:30pm, midnight, 3am, 7am, 1pm, 5pm and 8:30pm, each approximately one-hour long, amidst the extended musical modular bridges throughout the night and day.

Nik Bärtsch MOBILE is:

  • Nik Bärtsch, piano
  • Kaspar Rast, drums, percussion
  • Sha, bass clarinets and alto sax
  • Nicolas Stocker, drums, tuned percussion
  • Daniel Eaton, visual design

Concert Information

Starting at 7:00pm September 1, through to 10:00pm September 2. Members of Nik Bartsch’s MOBILE will perform its Ritual Groove Music non-stop throughout the 27 hours. The concert will contain both elements of precise performance pieces at specific ritualized times. In between these crafted moments, members of the ensemble will play continuously throughout the duration of the event.
Main ceremonies will take place at approximately 8:30pm, midnight, 3am, 7am, 1pm, 5pm and 8:30pm, each approximately one-hour long, connected by extended modular bridges.

The entire 27-hour performance will also be available via livestream on the event page on our website and on the NYUAD campus through the campus-wide cable system, channel 001.

Snack Food/beverage will be available for consumption in the lobby, as well as in the Dining Hall next door between the hours of 7:30am and 10:30pm. Food can also be delivered to The Arts Center lobby. No food or beverages, other than water in a sealed container, can be brought into the Black Box.

Audience members will be required to remove their shoes to enter the ritual space in the Black Box, so wear nice socks.

All of the tickets for the opening main ceremony have now sold out.

Due to popular demand and because we expect some people may not stay for all of the 27 hours, we are now offering Late Entry tickets. This ticket offers you the opportunity of priority admission to the performances after the end of first main ceremony at approximately 10:00pm on Thursday, Sept 1 until the event concludes at 10:00pm on Friday, Sept 2. (*note: all admission is subject to capacity) If you miss out on a ticket we encourage you to come along and try our standby line.

Once the concert has begun, we will admit additional audience members subject to capacity, at approximately 30-minute intervals in a manner so as not to disrupt the performance. We expect some capacity to open up at the conclusion of each main ceremony and we will have a standby line.
If you leave the performance for an extended period and wish to come back later (in the middle of the night or the next day), please retain your ticket and re-admission will be subject to space availability. We will do our best to get you back in. We expect some capacity to open up at the conclusion of each main ceremony.

While waiting for admission, or as an alternative to watching from inside the Black Box, audiences are welcome to enjoy the performance via audio simulcast to the Arts Center Lobby and audio-video simulcast to the Project Space.

If you choose to leave the Black Box (other than short breaks to use the facilities), and wish to re-enter at a later time, re-admission will be subject to availability, at approved re-entry times.

Feel free to stay all night. And all day the next day. We hope you will join us for this unique event.
