Center for Smart Engineering Materials (NYUAD-CSEM)

The NYUAD Center for Smart Engineering Materials (NYUAD-CSEM) provides an institutional research platform and organizational framework for active collaboration between science and engineering faculty, researchers, and students working in materials science. The Center's faculty and researchers design, prepare and deliver smart materials and devices relevant to the key sectors of the UAE's economy. By using an integrated, multidisciplinary, and synergistic approach in a pipeline of basic research, characterization, optimization, and implementation, the members of NYUAD-CSEM aim to provide smart and sustainable solutions to the requirement for smart materials for sensing and diagnostics in the oil/gas and civil engineering sectors, and to become leaders in the respective innovative technologies in the MENA region and internationally.

The exploratory component of NYUAD-CSEM focuses on two key research thrusts: smart sensing technologies for oil/gas (petroleomics), and smart materials for civil engineering. This will be realized via design, development, and assessment of

  • integrated, multifunctional, durable smart sensing technologies for ensuring uninterrupted flow and recovery of crude oil;
  • smart materials and devices for integration into self-monitoring, self-healing, and adaptive resilient infrastructures with extended lifetime.
