19 Washington Square North, New York
NYUAD's 19 Washington Square North office in New York City.

From its prestigious location in Greenwich Village, 19 Washington Square North (19 WSN) is the gateway to NYU Abu Dhabi at Washington Square. It is an information center for visitors interested in NYUAD; an active connecting point, stimulating interest and participation in the NYUAD community; and the academic home for NYUAD students, faculty, and administrators while staying in New York.

Information Center

19 WSN is a central source of information about NYUAD for prospective students and their families; NYU faculty who would like to teach, organize a public program, or participate in other ways in NYUAD; and faculty and staff candidates for positions at NYUAD.

Public Programs and Exhibitions

As part of the NYU Abu Dhabi Institute, 19 WSN hosts lectures, research workshops, exhibitions, and other public programs that reinforce the curricular and research initiatives of NYUAD; fosters collaborations with colleagues at NYU New York; and addresses developments in Abu Dhabi and the broad Middle East. Specific topics change from year to year, but the general areas of concern are:

  • The global curriculum of NYUAD
  • Society, culture, and history in the broad Middle East
  • Initiatives relevant to Abu Dhabi
  • The globalization of higher education
  • Undergraduate learning

A Center for NYUAD Faculty

To facilitate faculty flow between Abu Dhabi and New York, 19 WSN supports NYUAD faculty during an initial "integration" year at NYU New York, as well as NYUAD faculty who return to New York at other times. The integration residency is a special feature of our faculty model and is designed to nurture close interaction between NYU New York and NYUAD faculty.

NYUAD Research and Teaching

NYUAD faculty and research investigators at the NYUAD Institute present their research in workshops and lectures at 19 WSN. During their residency in New York, NYUAD faculty develop courses for the global curriculum of NYUAD, including core curriculum courses that offer a cross-cultural perspective on major issues. The courses taught by NYUAD faculty enrich the curriculum of NYU New York and allow departments and schools to expand the scope and depth of their programs.

A Majlis for NYUAD Students

NYUAD students come to Washington Square for study-away programs. The first study-away program was offered in January 2011, and in Spring 2012, a group of NYUAD sophomores spent the semester at NYU New York. Many classes and social activities take place at 19 WSN, which serves as a gathering place or majlis ("reception area" in Arabic) for NYU students from Abu Dhabi and New York to meet, collaborate, and learn from one another.
