Applying to university can be both exciting and overwhelming. To support high school seniors considering NYU Abu Dhabi, the admissions counselors have shared their top tips for making the most of the Common App.
Based on over a decade of experience reviewing applications, here’s what they recommend:
1. Start early and take time with each section
One of the most common challenges students face is underestimating how much time a strong application takes. Each component of the Common App — from the personal statement to the activity list — deserves focused attention.
The admissions team encourages students to give themselves enough time to draft, revise, and seek feedback. Applicants are advised to space out their work and revisit it with fresh eyes.
2. View the application as a whole story
Every part of the application is read and considered. Strong applications are those that build a cohesive and authentic picture of who the student is — not just academically, but personally and socially as well.
Rather than repeating the same strengths in every section, applicants should think about how each component can reveal something different about their interests, experiences, and personality.
3. Choose recommenders who truly know the student
Recommendation letters should go beyond academic performance. While grades matter, the admissions team values insights into how a student engages in class, interacts with peers, and contributes to their school or community.
Applicants are encouraged to choose teachers or mentors who genuinely understand them — individuals who can speak to their character and potential, not just their grades.
