Warren N. Churchill is Senior Lecturer of Music at NYU Abu Dhabi. He holds an EdD, EdM, and MA in Music Education from Teachers College, Columbia University, and a BM in Music Education from the Crane School of Music, SUNY Potsdam. He teaches courses on disability and music in the Core Curriculum, offers instruction in woodwinds, piano, and voice, and developed the course Music, Education, and Society, which explores sociological perspectives on music teaching and learning.
Churchill’s research is grounded in Disability Studies, with a focus on inclusive practices in music education as experienced by individuals labeled as having a disability or as Persons of Determination. He draws on ethnographic, narrative, and poststructuralist methods, with long-standing work on music making in Deaf and signing communities. More recently, his scholarship engages Critical Access Studies to explore how access is negotiated and redefined in educational and artistic contexts. His publications appear in Philosophy of Music Education Review, Research Studies in Music Education, and several edited collections, including The Oxford Handbook of Care in Music Education.
Prior to joining NYUAD, Churchill taught for 16 years in New York City public schools and has over 35 years of teaching experience overall. He currently serves as Associate Editor of TOPICS: A Journal of the MayDay Group and sits on the editorial board of Research Studies in Music Education. He has served on several doctoral defense committees and is a planning committee member for the Disability Studies and Music Education (DSME) conference. As part of his commitment to supporting emerging researchers, he currently supervises a recipient of NYUAD’s prestigious Tamayyuz Research Fellowship.
