Dore Laboratory

To increase our understanding of biology and medicine, the scientific community requires the continued development of new technologies for studying and manipulating cell physiology.

The research interests of the Dore Laboratory at NYUAD lie at the interface of chemistry and biology, creating new molecular entities to study complex biological systems. The power to design and synthesize molecules with appropriate function coupled with an understanding of reaction mechanisms enables the work.

The research is multidisciplinary in nature, involving organic chemistry, biochemistry, photochemistry, computational modeling and virtual screening, microscopy, and molecular and cell biology. The complexity of the problems addressed necessitates that team members, who come from a diversity of educational, scientific, and cultural backgrounds, collaborate with each other and with scientists around the world.

Current projects focus on three major areas:

  • Light-driven tools to study biological systems, including fundamental studies on photochemistry
  • CaaX proteases and the role they play in regulating cell physiology
  • Target-directed discovery and design of potential drug leads for malaria, cancer, and viral infections

  • Magnetic field as a probe of cell physiology
  • Discovering inhibitors of sodium-glucose co-transporters SGLT1 and SGLT2
  • Approaches to kinesin motor protein inhibitors
  • Studying the process of doctoral education from the perspective of graduate students
