Facilities

Major research equipment for resarch at the Center can be divided into four categories: fabrication, membrane characterization, analytical chemistry and testing. The Center has already been equipped with lab-scale instruments for fabrication, characterization and testing as well as pilot-scale facilities to manufacture and test desalination membranes.

Fabrication instruments acquired by the center include electrospinning, for nanofibrous polymeric and ceramic membranes, furnaces, a high-energy ball mill, ovens and centrifuges.

Existing facilities for membrane characterization at the center include: capillary flow porometer, BET, thermogravimetric analyzer, differential scanning calorimeter, dynamic mechanical analysis, liquid entry pressure, contact angle goniometer, particle size analyzer, zeta potential analyzer and FTIR.

The center also houses state-of-the-art lab-scale pilot tests for reverse osmosis, nanofiltration, membrane distillation and forward osmosis. Pilot-scale membrane manufacturing equipment including casting, rolling and drying equipment to manufacture commercial sized membrane elements are currently being purchased. In addition, the center is equipped with large-scale pilot units for microfiltration, ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis and nanofiltration to test developed desalination membranes and facilitate upscaling technologies developed at the center.
