Elena acquired her bachelor’s degree in Cognitive Science in August 2017. In the project, she outlined the difference between the philosophic concept of human autonomy and the so-called “autonomy” found in autonomous intelligent technical systems. In her thesis, it was argued that natural autonomy is a unique human property which, as of now, technical systems are unjustly ascribed. One month after graduation, Elena joined the Teaching, Learning and Development lab at NYU Abu Dhabi.

In the TLD lab, Elena manages the project “Through parents’ eyes: Exploring parents’ eye gaze during parent-child interactions (A cross-cultural comparison)”, which explores the interaction between mothers and children in three everyday situations. In 2017, she ran the experiments in one of the targeted cultures and she is now coordinating students both in Abu Dhabi and abroad to further collect data and prepare it for analysis. Her specific research interest within the project is to analyze the psycholinguistic behavior of mother and child in different situations and to investigate the cultural - or gender-specific values, which might shape interaction.
