Matthew Mitchell is a marine biologist from the UK. He completed his undergraduate degree in Marine Biology at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne after which he moved to Australia, where he completed Masters and PhD at James Cook University. For his PhD, he studied the role of olfactory cues in predator recognition in reef fishes. He has since completed two postdoctoral positions at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada (2014-2017) and Florida International University (2017-2019) before joining the Marine Biology Lab at NYUAD in January 2019.

At NYUAD, Matthew's work aims to understand how fishes cope with living in the extreme environments of the Arabian Gulf and how such stressors might affect their ability to function within coral reef fish communities. This work will include examining how trophic interactions, such as predator-prey dynamics and competitive interactions, might change under such conditions.
