Inclusion and Equity

The Office of Inclusion and Equity demonstrates the University's commitment to promoting diversity, intercultural understanding, and equal opportunity in academic excellence, research, teaching, leadership, administration, and service across the NYU Abu Dhabi community.

Our mission to foster and support an inclusive NYUAD environment is key to the attainment of NYUAD’s core goals. As such, our approach is based on promoting awareness and belonging; responding proportionately to workplace challenges; facilitating due process for examining allegations; and working collaboratively to provide solutions and support.

Our office administers the University's policies, procedures, and programs to support workplace equity and provides the following services:

  • Examination of Discrimination or Harassment Claims
  • Workplace Disability Support
  • No Tolerance for Retaliation
  • Title IX/Sexual Misconduct Support

Tamu Al Islam

Executive Director, Inclusion and Equity

 

Tamu Al-Islam is the Executive Director of NYUAD’s Office of Inclusion and Equity (OIE), where she leads the implementation, advancement, and monitoring of the University's policies, practices, and programs that foster workplace inclusion and equity for employees. In keeping the office’s mission, she provides guidance and consultation; conducts awareness education programs; investigates allegations of discrimination, harassment, sexual misconduct, and retaliation; partners with other offices to support intercultural fluency development; and monitors NYUAD’s workplace equity practices.

Al-Islam, who serves as NYUAD’s equal opportunity officer (EEO) in keeping with legal requirements, draws upon her experience in organizational development, human resources, and managing diversity to administer a fair investigatory process and develop inclusive campus practices. She participates in a number of highly collaborative campus-wide projects and initiatives to promote diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging, including NYUAD’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee.

Al-Islam’s career at NYU in New York and Abu Dhabi spans more than 25 years serving in various positions in HR, academic administration, professional development, employee relations, and relocation and mobility services.  Before assuming her current role, she was Deputy Director of the Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Scholars Program, and was previously Senior Director of the Office of the President. In her private life, she has led workshops on various social justice and cultural development issues at international conferences in Turkey, Nigeria, Spain, Jamaica, Italy, the UK, the US, and India.  She holds a BA in Liberal Studies, and an MA in educational leadership with a focus on the intercultural development of collegiate faculty and staff.
