Catherine Sweet obtained her MA in Islamic Studies and PhD in Political Science from the University of California, Los Angeles. Her doctoral dissertation focused on political liberalization and democratic transitions, with a focus on the Middle East and Morocco specifically. Currently on a leave of absence from the U.S. Department of State, Catherine has been a Foreign Service Officer since 2001. In that capacity, she has served as a Political/Economic/Consular Officer in N’Djamena, Chad; an Economic Officer in Kuwait City, Kuwait, and later as the Counselor for Political Affairs there; a Political Officer in Jakarta, Indonesia; a North Africa and Iraq Analyst in Washington, DC; and most recently as the Political and Economic Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Abu Dhabi.
