Al-Qassimi studied Multimedia Design at the American University of Sharjah (AUS) and earned an MFA in Graphic Design from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). He served as an instructor at RISD, and an Assistant Professor of Design at AUS. His research investigates the contemporary cultural identity of the UAE and the region through graphic design and typography. Al-Qassimi founded Fikra Design Studio in 2006 — an award-winning multidisciplinary design studio — and launched Fikra Campus in 2017 as a design-led communal space created to connect and enable creatives and entrepreneurs which comprises a co-working space, a café, a gallery, a library, and an active urban rooftop. Fikra is also organizing the Fikra Graphic Design Biennial — the first of its kind in the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia— inaugurating in November, 2018.
