Green Grants

The Office of Sustainability at NYU New York offers grant programs to support creative projects and innovative ideas that advance sustainability across all NYU campuses, including NYU Abu Dhabi.

The Green Grants program provides funding for creative projects and innovative ideas that advance sustainability at NYU.

It was established to support members of the NYU community in pursuing initiatives that:

  • improve the university’s environmental performance
  • foster environmental literacy and community engagement
  • advance applied research and design
  • expand sustainability learning opportunities
  • demonstrate best practices and technologies

The program prioritizes projects with potential for long-term institutional impact.

Eligibility

Any current NYU student, faculty member, administrator, or staff member can apply as a project leader.

  • Applicants may come from any NYU campus or study away site.
  • Microgrant teams must be fully internal to NYU and partner with an administrative department for funding disbursement.
  • For larger Green Grants, collaboration with alumni, community organizations, and local partners is encouraged.

Types of Funding

Microgrants (up to USD 3,000)

Microgrants support smaller-scale sustainability projects. They are intended for pilot ideas, short-term or self-contained initiatives, or projects that can later be developed into full Green Grant proposals.

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, with decisions typically provided within two weeks.

Green Grants (up to USD 20,000)

Green Grants fund larger, more impactful, and innovative projects that demonstrate strong feasibility and potential for long-term institutionalization or self-sustainability.

Applications are reviewed by the Green Grants Committee and are accepted on a semesterly basis.
