Printing Mindfulness

Printing Mindfulness Initiative

In March 2022, the Office of Sustainability and Stewardship introduced a soft printing cap of 1,000 pages per six months for all NYUAD community members. This cap is part of a broader printing mindfulness initiative designed to reduce excess printing and create a more sustainable campus. The program works by centrally managing networked printers and encouraging users to think before they print.

How It Works

  • Each time a community member prints, the current print balance is displayed at the bottom of the printer screen.
  • The soft cap is not a hard limit. Printing can continue beyond 1,000 when necessary.
  • Balances reset twice a year.
  • Automated reminders are sent when the balance reaches set levels.

Generated Impact Since Launch

  • 6.8 million pages saved since 2022
That’s enough paper to create a stack 1.8 times the height of the Empire State Building (380 m).
  • 56% reduction in printing
From 6.5 million pages printed in Academic Year 2018–2019 to 2.8 million pages in 2024-2025.
