Legal Affairs

Working closely with the Office of General Counsel in New York, the Office of Legal Affairs provides legal services to New York University Abu Dhabi responding to its University clients, providing timely and expert legal advice and guidance to the University, in support of NYUAD's educational goals and objectives. The office consists of attorneys and administrative staff and have the sole discretion to interview and retain outside legal counsel for NYUAD. The office provides reliable and professional advice with respect to all NYUAD matters including:

  • NYUAD's mission of teaching, research, and service;
  • advising and supporting NYUAD personnel to ensure excellence in fulfilling their legal and ethical obligations;
  • facilitating all aspects of transactions at the University as necessary or appropriate;
  • representing the University as legal counsel with government authorities;
  • facilitating communications, where appropriate, among various University departments and schools in the context of legal matters; and 
  • serving as the point of contact for all interaction with outside counsel, who may be retained by the Office of General Counsel in its sole discretion.

Caroline Dimitri

Associate General and Chief Legal Counsel

Caroline Dimitri is the Chief Legal Counsel of New York University's Abu Dhabi campus. Caroline received her Maîtrise (JD equivalent) and her License (bachelor’s equivalent) in Business Law from the University of Aix-Marseille, Aix-en-Provence, France, then received her LLM (Diplôme d’Études Specialiseés) in Economic Law from the University of Nice Sophia–Antipolis, Nice, France. She also received a scholarship awarded by her University to continue her studies at the University of Hamline Law School in the United States, where she obtained a dual LLM/Master of Arts in International Law and Management.

Immediately prior to joining NYU Abu Dhabi in 2010, Caroline was the General Counsel of General Motors in the Middle East for five years. Prior to that, Caroline worked since her arrival to the UAE in 2001 with Ja’afar Alwan, Al Jaziri and Associates (one of the oldest and well-established local law firms in Dubai, initially as an associate then the co-head of the Corporate and Commercial department. 

Caroline is a qualified lawyer admitted to practice in the US in the state of New York. She is fluent in French, Arabic, and English.

She is an active member of several professional associations and groups, and including the American Bar Association, the International Bar Association (IBA), the New York State Bar Association (NYSBA), the UAE In-house Lawyer Association, and ASIAN-MENA in-house counsel.
