Graduate Programs

The Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs oversees graduate academics and student life for the NYU Abu Dhabi campus. The goal of the office is to create a thriving community at NYUAD for graduate students and postdoctoral associates, coordinating a holistic approach to their training, and serving as a resource for more than 200 postgraduate researchers and their faculty mentors.

The office currently supports PhD students through the Global PhD Student Fellowship, as well as visiting students, fellows, and postdoctoral associates across all disciplines. Our team members design strategies for all topics that impact graduate study, including:

  • recruitment and admissions
  • funding and benefits
  • governance
  • mentorship
  • academic oversight
  • career preparedness
  • residential services
  • travel logistics
  • individual well-being
  • new program development

The office also collaborates closely with graduate and postdoctoral committees to organize events and advocate for continuous enhancements to this community’s experience at NYUAD.

Sunil Kumar

Interim Vice Provost, Graduate and Postdoctoral Programs

As Interim Vice Provost, Sunil Kumar provides oversight and guidance for the Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Programs and the services provided to these communities. Sunil presides over the Graduate Governance and Curriculum Committee, which assesses graduate programming and graduate-level curricula across the academic divisions. In addition to reviewing current programs and processes facilitated by NYUAD, Sunil and the Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Programs review proposals for establishing new graduate programs at NYUAD, at both the master’s and PhD level.

Sunil is a mechanical engineer whose scholarly research focuses on the transport of light and thermal radiation, specifically examining how lasers interact with surfaces and scattering media, fire dynamics, thermal-fluid analysis, and applied mathematics. He came to NYUAD from Polytechnic Institute of New York University (now NYU Tandon School of Engineering), where he was Graduate Dean and Associate Provost, and former head of the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Manufacturing Engineering. He has also taught at the University of California Berkeley, was a scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratories, and a visiting scientist at NASA’s Ames Research Center in California.
