New York University Abu Dhabi seeks to appoint a Laboratory Operations Manager, reporting to the Professor of Biology, Neuroscience and Physiology.
The Laboratory Operations Manager will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Desplan research laboratory, including equipment procurement, maintenance, and calibration, as well as inventory management systems for fruit fly and weevil investigations. The Lab Manager will collaborate with principal investigators and research teams to provide support for experiments, participation in scientific conferences and workshops, and facilitation of outreach programs and educational initiatives are also key responsibilities. The Lab Manager is also responsible to supervise, train, and mentor laboratory staff in insect husbandry techniques and experimental protocols.
Job Responsibilities:
Facility Management:
Oversee day-to-day lab operations, including equipment and inventory
Manage equipment procurement, maintenance, and calibration
Implement inventory management systems for fruit fly and weevil investigations, including responsible management of laboratory fly, reagent, and antibody stocks, as well as providing support maintaining weevil colonies
Coordinate facility upgrades to support research projects
Personnel Management:
Train laboratory staff in insect husbandry techniques and experimental protocols
Foster a positive work environment and promote collaboration and professional development among team members
Facilitate effective communication and teamwork to enhance productivity and scientific collaboration within the laboratory
Quality Assurance and Compliance:
Develop and enforce standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements
Conduct regular inspections and audits to maintain quality standards and data integrity
Provide training and guidance to laboratory members on regulatory compliance and safety practices
Outreach and Collaboration:
Support the development of outreach programs and educational initiatives to engage with the broader community and raise awareness of insect biology, ecology, and research
Collaborate with schools, museums, and community organizations to develop educational resources and hands-on activities, fostering interest in science and entomology among diverse audiences
Participate in public seminars, science festivals, and community events to communicate research findings, engage with the public, and inspire curiosity about fruit flies and weevils
Facilitate interactive demonstrations and presentations to showcase the significance of insect research and its applications
Budgeting, Procurement, and Interdepartmental Liaison:
Develop and manage the laboratory budget, coordinating procurement and optimizing operations
Negotiate contracts and track expenditures to ensure fiscal responsibility
Collaborate with finance and administrative departments to share resources and support department and institutional goals
Import and Export Logistics:
Manage importation and exportation of fly stocks and research materials, coordinating with regulatory agencies and shipping carriers
Obtain necessary permits and maintain accurate records to ensure compliance with import/export regulations
Facilitate collaboration with international research partners to promote scientific exchange
Research Support:
Collaborate with principal investigators and research teams to provide support for experiments and technical assistance
Foster interdisciplinary collaborations and knowledge sharing among laboratory members and external partners
Participate in scientific conferences and workshops to stay updated on advancements in the field and network with peers
Required Education:
Bachelors Degree in a science related field
Required Experience:
Minimum of 5 years of laboratory management experience in a research or academic setting
Strong background in team leadership and personnel management
Experience in developing and implementing SOPs and safety protocols
Proficient in laboratory budget management and resource allocation
Proven expertise in insect husbandry techniques and experimental protocols
First Aid and Proper Lab Safety Training
Excellent communication and organizational skills, with a track record of fostering a collaborative work environment
Familiarity with compliance and regulatory requirements for laboratory operations
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize tasks effectively
Preferred Education:
Masters Degree in any field of Management
Strong understanding of GLP (Good Laboratory Practice) standards
Preferred Experience:
5+ years of Drosophila and Red Palm Weevil Research Experience
