NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) seeks to appoint a Clinical Veterinarian reporting to Senior Assistant Director, Specialist Research Labs at NYUAD.

The Clinical Veterinarian will provide clinical veterinary care such as:

  • Participates in an on-call, emergency care, weekend and holiday rotation as required to assure clinical veterinary coverage
  • Actively manages and oversees clinical research involving mice, rats and fish with responsibilities that include developing and implementing procedures for pre and post-operative care, anesthesia, analgesia, and euthanasia, in addition to providing direct oversight of a surgical OR and related resources
  • Serves as an alternate member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee
  • Helps to ensure NYUAD SRL program of veterinary care remains in compliance with all international, federal, state, and local regulations, and meets AAALAC accreditation standards
  • Collaboratively coordinates with departments within SRL, such as Husbandry Operations and the Business Office, in addition to departments outside of SRL, such as Environmental Health & Safety and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee
  • Provides surgical and technical support to investigators through training and animal model development
  • Helps to manage preventative medicine programs, including the rodent sentinel program, vendor surveillance, and rodent quarantine
  • Assists the Senior Assistant Director and SRL management develop, update, and implement departmental standard operating procedures
  • Assists the Senior Assistant Director and SRL management develop short and long-term plans to help achieve departmental goals, or to support the implementation of new ideas or processes, and proactively identifies and addresses contingencies
  • Maintains familiarity with trends, issues, and advances in strategic and program planning through periodic review of relevant journals or other literature
  • Identifies and actively pursues a planned program of professional growth through continuing education, etc

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Work with the researchers to solve veterinary problems as they are reported and to manage and direct vet staff so that problems are resolved in a safe and timely manner
  • Will interface with faculty to determine the veterinary requirements for new projects. Will provide regular reports to the associate director as required by the needs of the project
  • Will supervise the Veterinary Medicine Program. Provide veterinarian care for the animals in the animal care facility which includes the regular checking of cages for medical assessment and insuring proper social enrichment of the species as required by IACUC and AAALAC International standards
  • Maintain veterinary medical supplies– work with the SRL management to verify that veterinary supplies are maintained at acceptable levels
  • Maintain veterinary operations – Husbandry and lab staff are following veterinary standard operating procedures, verify surgical equipment is properly calibrated, verify husbandry staff and lab staff working in the surgical OR and procedure rooms have the proper PPE, Verify lab areas have proper safety sensors such as temperature, CO2, humid. Provide veterinary care for all animal use program animal models on daily, weekend and holiday rotation Schedule

Required Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field

Preferred Education: 

  • Master's Degree
  • ACLAM Board certification

Required Experience: 

  • 3+ years of experience working in research and teaching laboratory operations
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, email

Preferred Experience: 

  • Experience living and working in the Middle East
