New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) seeks to appoint an Assistant Director, Academic Resource Center reporting to the Director of Student Advisement and Academic Resource Center.

The Assistant Director will work closely with the Director of Academic Advisement to build the structure, processes and services of a new Academic Resource Center at NYUAD. The Assistant Director will contribute to student success, satisfaction and retention, coordinating a wide range of academic advising services and programs designed to meet the needs of NYUAD’s globally diverse student body. The Assistant Director will foster a climate of student-centeredness, service excellence and continuous improvement and will develop and deliver student advising services primarily for, but not limited to, students in their first three (pre-major) semesters. The Assistant Director will also help train advisors and student staff, coordinate with and support faculty mentors, develop and supervise peer tutoring programs, and implement NYU’s new advising and mentoring platform, NYU Connect. The Assistant Director will participate in the development of assessment tools and will help collect and analyze data to make informed decisions.

A primary function of this role will be to advise students individually and in groups about courses, registration, degree requirements, major selection, and all other academic policies for students. The Assistant Director will also serve as a liaison with other offices providing student support and advising services (e.g. University Registrar, Program Heads, Global Education, and Student Success and Well-being).

Key Responsibilities:

Coordination of Advising Services and Academic Resource Center Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates the day-to-day operations of the Academic Resource Center for all newly admitted and continuing students and special cohorts Coordinates advisor and student staff schedules (e.g. drop in advising, appointments, workshops)
  • Works with the Director to plan and conduct training for advising team, faculty mentors, and campus community as needed
  • Assists in implementing enrollment management strategies including monitoring student enrolment and progress
  • Tracks academic history and current grades of incoming students, signaling areas of concern to address in advising sessions with students.
  • Conducts outreach campaigns and retention exercises
  • Develops and coordinates targeted advising workshops and information sessions (e.g. required advising & new student enrollment). Acts as advising lead to plan, conduct and evaluate sessions and works with advisors, student staff and departments to coordinate logistics (e.g. communications and room bookings).
  • Builds strategic partnerships with campus units such as University Registrar, Program Heads, Global Education, Student Success and Well-being, Academic Enrichment Program, the Writing Center, Student Financial Services, the Career Development Center and Residential Education to support and refer students.
  • Assists in developing and overseeing the Peer Tutoring Program Coordinates, supports and liaises with Faculty Mentors
  • Helps to develop and review online and print advising material and tools and makes recommendations for changes/updates to the Director Student Advisement. Liaises with the appropriate University offices on relevant materials.
  • Collects and maintains statistical data related to advising activities including, but not limited to, operational reports, service volumes, client satisfaction; prepares related reports as required
  • Develops and reviews processes and procedures and special projects and works with the Director to evaluate and make improvements 

Academic Advising

  • Works with the Director to design and offer a wide range of advising services and programs to meet the needs of a diverse student body
  • Serves as a basic source of information for students and campus community about degree requirements, policies, and procedures
  • Through workshops and individual advising sessions, assists students in defining and planning academic goals; selecting majors; evaluating progress toward goals; understanding curricular requirements; navigating course selection; determining assistance needed (e.g. tutoring, time management, organizing course information, stress management, etc.); and, when appropriate, finding additional institutional and community support services.
  • Maintains student profiles and records in NYU Connect advising platform; documents all pertinent student information
  • Facilitates academic processes such as grade change requests, overload petitions, curriculum and study abroad equivalencies; tracks retention, recommends add/drops, conducts degree audits, and maintains advising statistics. Responds to student questions from website/email alias, and presents advising services at orientation events 
  • Represent the Academic Resource Center and the Director of Advisement at meetings and events when needed

Special Events

  • Collaborate with Student Affairs, Admissions, and other University colleagues to support the planning and/or execution of programming, events, and activities.  
  • This may include select weekend and/or evening commitments during the academic year and summer months

Required Education:

  • Master’s Degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, Social Work, or related fields

Required Experience:

  • Minimum of two years progressive leadership experience in advising or student services in a higher education setting
  • Skills in interviewing and advising
  • Superior written and oral communications skills in English
  • Ability to present in front of small and large groups
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills
  • Project coordination, time management and priorities management skills
  • Experience with data collection and analysis
  • Analytical and problem solving skills plus a teamwork and dedicated customer service approach
  • Ability to communicate cross-functionally with all levels and in an academic environment
  • Organized work habits, consistent accuracy, and attentiveness to detail
  • Ability to maintain confidential and sensitive information and documents
  • Experience with the Google Suite of programs and/or Microsoft Office Suite
  • Demonstrated experience

Preferred Experience:

  • Understanding of and ability to implement various academic advising theories and practices
  • Arabic language skills 
  • Previous experience serving first-generation college students and/or marginalized groups
  • Demonstrated awareness of and commitment to operating within diverse context and culture
  • Experience with Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging frameworks, and how they impact student development
