This position assists the Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Spiritual Life & Intercultural Education (SLICE) in developing and supporting inclusive spirituality and faith based initiatives and capacity building as it relates to the overall well-being of the NYUAD community. The Assistant Director will collaborate within Student Affairs, the Office of Inclusion and Equity, Office of Student Success and Well Being, students, other divisions, and build partnerships with faith based leaders in the broader Abu Dhabi community. The Assistant Director will play an integral role in co-creating and implementing a vision of an inclusive, self-aware and resilient campus environment that supports a diverse community of students, faculty and staff.
The Assistant Director will bring a depth of understanding of religious and faith based spirituality, as well as spirituality, mindfulness and meaning making outside of faith traditions. The role will identify divisional opportunities for engagement in spirituality and mindfulness frameworks and skills, identify any gaps in faith-based and non-denominational spiritual well being support, and work to procure opportunities to fill those gaps. This role will center on building capacity for both students and Student Affairs staff in paradigms of meaning, purpose and centeredness, utilizing spiritual wisdom from Eastern and Western traditions of religion and spirituality. The role will also serve as a meeting point for IDBE efforts; including focusing on mindful activism that allows social justice efforts to be undertaken with resilience and centeredness. The Assistant director will counsel students on matters pertaining to faith and spirituality. The Assistant Director will support the Director in a variety of capacities, including but not limited to: the creation and implementation of: spirituality and mindfulness retreats and programs; developing a framework for spiritually oriented coaching and mentoring; assessment and reporting; on-campus programming informed by transpersonal psychology, mindfulness theories and faith traditions; facilitating workshops and training programs for students, staff, and faculty; and providing administrative support to the Director and/or division when needed.
Interfaith development rests upon the belief that people of different faiths and worldviews can seek common ground through compassionate learning and listening. The friendships which evolve from dialogues and partnerships across faiths can create a powerful holding environment for students to make meaning of their world in relationship with others. The role will envision and actualize inclusive environments celebrating the differences and the uniqueness of diverse religious and spiritual traditions; establish positive and collaborative working relationships with related campus and community leaders and develop an interfaith students leadership council to intersect with the Abu Dhabi community to do cross-cultural and interfaith bridge building.
As with all SLICE team members, it is critical that the Assistant Director maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies.
