New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) seeks to appoint a Director of Student Advisement and Academic Success Center reporting to the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Academic Development. NYU Abu Dhabi is currently seeking a seasoned professional to build a team of professional advisors and oversee the establishment of a new, robust Academic Success Center.
The Director will recalibrate NYUAD’s vision and mission for academic advisement and mentoring and, in addition to direct consultation with individual students, will manage the Center’s relationships with the academic divisions and adjacent advising and mentoring initiatives in Global Education, Student Success and Wellness, the Academic Enrichment Program, Residential Education, First-year Programs, and the Writing Program.
The Director will be responsible for training and supervising professional academic advisers; oversee the selection, assignment, and orientation of pre-major faculty mentors; and provide orientation and development for major mentors. In the first two years, the Director will scale up the Academic Success Center with adequate staff and student peer advisors and tutors to meet the needs of a globally diverse cohort of roughly 550 incoming students per year. The Director will oversee the implementation of NYU’s new academic advising software platform, NYU Connect, and will collaborate with the University Registrar, Deans, and Program Heads on all student academic data tracking, analysis, and reporting required for degree progress, academic probation, student returns, and other retention and success initiatives.
The Director will report to the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Academic Development and will work closely with the Vice Provost for Institutional Research, Assessment, and Academic Affairs on matters related to academic policy violations.
Academic Success Center
The Director oversees all strategic and operational aspects of the Academic Success Center. Including, policy development and implementation, supervision of professional advisors, support staff and budget.
Academic Success Center functions:
Meet with all students individually to help navigate their early undergraduate experience
Host events to assist students in planning academic programs, choosing a major, and negotiating registration
Serve as a primary source of information about degree requirements, policies, and procedures
Assign undeclared students to faculty mentors and professional advisors
Advise students who are referred with academic probation and suspension concerns and review degree plan progress
Assess student requests for drops and withdrawals and conduct exit interviews for university withdrawals
Ensure students are provided consistent, accurate and prompt advising services, coordinating with academic departments
Collect, analyze, maintain, and disseminate data related to academic advising and student success to university leadership
The Director is also responsible for envisaging and implementing the university's academic mentoring programs.
Academic Mentoring purview:
Provide vision to the university advising community through a faculty-based academic mentoring program
Serve as primary liaison and resource for faculty academic mentors
Develop and implement training for professional advisors and faculty mentors in conjunction with the Hilary Ballon Center for Teaching and Learning Interpret and apply academic and campus policy, as well as best practices in
providing information and analysis for the university advising community
Develop and promote advising practice guided by learning outcomes
Additional Director Duties
Forge close working ties with relevant offices and programs across the university to ensure consistency and clarity
Work with the campus community to develop schedules, policies, and operational procedures
Oversee the implementation of NYU’s new academic advising software platform, NYU Connect
Work to ensure that staffing and technology are adequate to meet the needs of all students, staff, and campus stakeholders
Collaborate with the Vice Provost for Institutional Research, Assessment and Academic Affairs; the University Registrar; Deans; and Program Heads on all student academic data tracking, analysis, and reporting required for degree progress, academic probation, student returns, and other retention and success initiatives
Train academic advising staff to deliver optimal services to all students, staff, and campus stakeholders. This includes, but is not limited to, ongoing professional development and training for all advising staff
Provide academic mentoring to individual students and serve as a role model for academic mentoring
Masters level degree in Education, Counseling or related field
PhD or other terminal degree
At least eight years of experience in academic advising or a related area in a higher education
Documented ability to lead and be part of a student services team
Superior organizational skills
Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
Ability to communicate cross-functionally with all levels and in an academic environment
Significant experience with the use of technology, including student tracking systems
Knowledge of research-based best practices for student success
Innovative and student-focused mindset
Ability to manage and maintain confidential and sensitive information and documents
Flexibility to adapt to organizational needs in collaboration with counterparts at New York University in New York and New York University in Shanghai
