Position Summary

New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) seeks to appoint an Executive Director for Advancement & Philanthropy, reporting jointly to the Vice Chancellor for NYUAD and the Senior Vice President, University Development and Alumni Relations, NYU.

The Executive Director of Advancement & Philanthropy (DAP) serves as the chief advancement officer for NYU Abu Dhabi’s Development and Alumni Relations Office (DARO). S/he will be the strategic leader for the oversight, planning and implementation of a comprehensive fundraising and alumni relations program focused on securing significant financial resources from individuals, alumni, and friends of NYUAD.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Cultivate, solicit and steward top donor prospects for NYUAD personally and in partnership with the Vice Chancellor and Provost. Identify and carry a personal portfolio of 50-70 active prospects and as necessary support the Vice Chancellor and Provost in managing portfolios of their top prospects
  • Provide direction for the recruitment, selection, orientation, development and retention of a high caliber staff that possess the understanding and sensitivity to work effectively within the broader Middle East and local UAE community. Manage, support and evaluate team, incorporating agreed to metrics and priorities for individual members and for the team as a unit. Establish clear directions and set “stretch” goals, objectives and benchmarks. Be a thoughtful performance coach and champion of both individual and team successes, creating where necessary professional development programs
  • Work closely with the university’s government partners, leadership and administration to establish and maintain productive relationships; to develop, understand and effectively communicate the case for support; and to establish stretch fundraising goals and the ultimate achievement of those goals
  • In partnership with NYUAD and UDAR leadership, contribute to the development, understanding, interpretation, and support of University policies and procedures reflective of the UAE region
  • Oversee an Alumni Relations and Annual Fund program to ensure a coordinated and integrated strategy with NYU New York, inclusive of participation and fundraising goals
  • Manage budget, assess needs, evaluate past expenditures and prepare related cost projections; allocate and oversee expenditures for publications and special events; conduct cost benefit analyses; review expenditure control reports and approve budget adjustments

Required Education:

  • 10 years progressively responsible experience in development, at least five of which must be in a managerial capacity, or equivalent combination

Preferred Education:

  • Graduate Degree

Required Experience:

  • Higher education fundraising experience in raising seven figure gifts and supporting a dean or senior leader within a not-for-profit
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, extraordinary communication and negotiation skills as well as political savvy and flexibility. Ability to communicate a compelling and inspired vision and a deep understanding of the core purpose, mission, goals, and aspirations of NYU Abu Dhabi and New York University
  • Ability and experience in managing a development staff and interacting with a diverse population
  • Demonstrated ability to strategize, interact effectively with alumni, faculty, donors, and officers, and to meet fundraising goals
  • An accomplished, strategic fundraising professional with at least ten years of proven, successful leadership experience in advancement, management and performance coaching, constituency engagement, and campaign management, preferably in a complex academic environment
  • Possess strong analytical, managerial, strategic planning, and motivational skills; a keen understanding of advancement best practices; a comprehensive knowledge of all major advancement functions, and a track record of significant personal success cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding donors at the major and principal gift levels
  • Demonstrate a high level of integrity and character, and exhibit the maturity, sophistication, and credibility to effectively engage and partner with key internal and external stakeholders, inclusive of our government partners

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience in an academic environment working with faculty and deans
  • Successful fundraising office start-up with demonstrated success
  • Knowledge of more advanced gift planning concepts
  • Business planning experience
