New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) seeks to appoint an Associate Director of Research reporting to the Senior Vice Provost of Research Outreach; Managing Director, Research Institute; Professor of Biology.

The Associate Director of Research plays a leading role in developing the NYUAD Office of Research reputation for excellence in scholarship. This role is responsible for the following areas: creation, oversight and management of scholarly programs, including all operational and logistical aspects; in addition to cultivating relationships with the larger scholarly community at NYU to enhance participation in the research program; and reporting on the Office of Research cohorts of post-doctoral and post-graduate research associates, research assistants, and other programs. The incumbent will share responsibility with the Research Institute in the day-to-day operation of the division and will prepare key metrics on regular and ad hoc basis to key stakeholders of NYU and NYUAD.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assists the SVP Research Outreach on implementing strategic endeavors and priorities of the Research Institute. Monitors the ongoing process of grant development, submission, review and notification; discusses and resolves administrative problems that arise
  • Acts as secretary for the RRC, coordinates meetings with RRC members, distributes agenda 2 weeks ahead of each meeting, takes minutes and distributes minutes and action plan to relevant members. Acts as a secretary for the Scientific Review Board, coordinates meetings, distributes agenda, and takes and distributes minutes. Responsible for all correspondence with the PI and center directors regarding committee decisions
  • Responsible for gathering and reviewing Annual reports for all research centers and providing quarterly, semi-annual and annual progress reports for management, RRC and Tamkeen as need be, and monitoring and reporting key performance indicators. Ensures healthy and collaborative administrative relationships with Tamkeen and the PI. Oversees and coordinate process for centers reviews including appointment of external and internal reviewers, distributing reports, coordinating various committee meeting and communicating decisions
  • Serves as the divisional resource for all administrative issues concerning human resources and procurement policy issues, coordinates with the various support service units including Academic HR, Research Administration, Core Facilities and Procurement on various matters relating to the proper and smooth running of the research centers
  • Serves as the point of contact for the space needs of the research centers. Coordinates with the various units including facilities, labs and core facilities on matters relating to the design of space renovations for research facilities as needed, identifies and resolves facility problems that arise. Oversee and manage event planning for Research Institute events and initiatives including annual research conference, research forum and other initiatives
  • Research laws, policies, departmental precedents or other documents necessary for appropriate responses to current events or issues. Continuously assesses and improves the efficiency of systems and processes

Education Requirements

  • Master’s degree in a related area (e.g., public policy or public administration, management, higher education administration)

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 7 years of related/applicable work experience in higher education, with background in research administration, academic or fellowship advising, or related field
  • Excellent knowledge of the academic, research, and operational functions of major research universities
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively represent the interests of a large, complex institution to government officials and to accurately and effectively respond to inquiries from diverse constituencies
  • Superior ability to present complex quantitative and qualitative information clearly and succinctly to diverse audiences, including audiences with no technical background. Data-driven approach to management
  • Demonstrated skill in strategic communications and messaging
  • Superior written and oral communication skills in English, including technical writing skills
  • Excellent research and analytical skills. Ability to analyze key departmental metrics in order to track individual/team performance
  • Ability to quickly develop in-depth knowledge of external constituencies and to provide guidance and assistance to university offices in responding to these constituencies effectively
  • Ability to build consensus and coalitions to achieve strategic goals in an environment of multiple stakeholders with diverse interests and perspectives
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including demonstrated skill in working with diverse groups of people and navigating cultural differences with respect and grace
  • Ability to manage complex projects and deliver excellent results on time
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to handle highly sensitive and confidential information and situations with utmost discretion
  • Excellent computer skills, including strong proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. (Skill in other presentational software, Mekko Graphics, and/or other related tools would be helpful.)
  • Arabic language skills
